Heat pump hot water systems use a refrigeration cycle to collect heat from the surrounding air and transfer it into stored water. They still use electricity to run the compressor and fan, but they can use substantially less electricity than conventional electric-resistance storage under suitable conditions.

Hot Water Outlet carries heat pumps across recognised brands including Rheem, Rinnai, Dux, iStore, Envirosun, Stiebel Eltron and Emerald Energy. This guide covers the broad buying decision: system size, all-in-one versus split, plug-in versus hardwired, noise, smart controls, refrigerant, climate, solar-PV scheduling, STCs, replacement and current prices.

Heat Pump Basics

How Does Heat Pump Hot Water Work?

A heat pump water heater works on the same basic refrigeration principle as an air conditioner operating in reverse. A fan draws surrounding air across an evaporator, refrigerant absorbs heat from that air, the compressor raises the refrigerant temperature and a condenser transfers the heat into the stored water.

Because the system is moving existing heat rather than creating all of the heat with an electric element, it can deliver several units of heat to the water for each unit of electricity consumed under suitable conditions. Actual efficiency changes with ambient temperature, water temperature, operating mode and model design.

Evaporator & Fan

Draws energy from the surrounding air. The system needs enough airflow around the evaporator to operate correctly.

Compressor

Raises refrigerant pressure and temperature so heat can be transferred effectively into the hot-water system.

Condenser

Transfers heat from the refrigeration circuit into the stored water through the model’s specific heat-exchange design.

Storage Tank

Stores heated water for showers, sinks, baths and other household use, just like other storage hot-water systems.

Heat Pump Types

All-In-One, Split, Plug-In, Smart & Quiet Heat Pumps

Heat pumps can be grouped by physical layout and by specific features. These categories overlap: for example, an all-in-one system can also be plug-in, WiFi-enabled and designed for low-noise operation.

IntegratedAll-In-One

Tank, compressor, fan and controls combined into one appliance. Common for straightforward residential replacement.

Separate ComponentsSplit System

Storage tank and heat-pump unit installed separately, providing more flexibility for tank height and compressor placement.

Electrical ConnectionPlug-In

Selected models connect through a suitable manufacturer-approved plug and outlet rather than a permanent hardwired connection.

Controls & AcousticsSmart / Quiet

Selected systems add WiFi, app control, timers, solar scheduling or reduced-noise operating modes.

Heat Pump Sizing

What Size Heat Pump Hot Water System Do I Need?

Tank size should be based on actual hot-water use rather than household count alone. A practical demand guide is around 40L per person per day for light use, 50L average, 65L high use and 80L very heavy use. Recovery then determines how quickly the tank can replace the heat that has been used.

40LLight use / person / dayShort showers and lower overall hot-water demand.
50LAverage use / person / dayA useful starting point for normal household sizing.
65LHigh use / person / dayLong showers, baths or frequent back-to-back demand.
80LVery heavy use / person / dayUseful as a stress-test for unusually high daily consumption.
Litres do not tell the whole story.

A 270L system with strong heat-pump output and effective boost can recover differently from another 270L model. Compare tank capacity, recovery, operating modes and household demand together.

Common Capacity Classes

180L, 200L, 250L, 270L, 280L, 300L & Larger Heat Pumps

180L–220L

Compact heat pumps for lower-demand households, smaller families or sites where physical size is important.

250L–280L

A common middle range for family homes, balancing stored capacity with manageable physical size.

300L–320L

Higher-capacity options for larger households, multiple bathrooms, baths or frequent back-to-back showers.

330L–340L+

Large residential storage where genuinely high daily demand or longer scheduled heating gaps justify extra reserve.

Technology Comparison

Heat Pump vs Electric Storage, Gas & Solar Hot Water

System typeHow it heats waterMain advantagesMain checks
Heat PumpMoves ambient heat into stored water using a refrigeration cycle.Lower electricity use than conventional resistance storage in suitable conditions; no roof collectors required.Airflow, noise, climate performance, recovery, electrical supply and condensate.

Gas Storage / ContinuousGas burner heats stored or flowing water.Fast recovery or continuous delivery depending on type.Natural Gas/LPG, ventilation, gas supply and future energy costs.
Solar Hot WaterRoof collectors transfer solar heat into stored water with backup heating.Uses direct solar heat and can reduce purchased energy.Roof suitability, collectors, boost system, installation complexity and maintenance.
Electrical Connection

Plug-In vs Hardwired Heat Pump Hot Water

Some residential heat pumps are supplied with a plug for connection to a suitable outlet, while others are permanently hardwired. Plug-in can simplify the electrical side where the existing outlet, circuit and protection already meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

Hardwired models may use different electrical input or backup-element ratings. Do not compare only compressor wattage: the complete maximum input, current and backup-heating arrangement determine the electrical requirements.

Plug-In

Useful where a suitable manufacturer-approved outlet and circuit can be provided at the heat-pump location.

Hardwired

Permanent circuit connection that may suit higher input, different boost elements or installations where an outlet is not the preferred connection method.

Heat Pump Noise

How Quiet Are Heat Pump Hot Water Systems?

Heat pumps contain a fan and compressor, so some operating sound is normal. Published sound levels are usually given in dB(A), but the test distance and conditions matter. A figure measured at 3 metres should not be directly compared with a figure measured at 1 metre.

Real-world noise also depends on the installation. Bedroom windows, hard walls, fences, corners and poor mounting can make a unit more noticeable. Some models include Quiet or Silent modes that reduce output and noise at the cost of slower recovery.

Smart Controls & Solar PV

WiFi, Timers, Apps & Daytime Solar Heating

Many modern heat pumps include timers, WiFi or app control. Depending on the model, connected functions can include tank temperature, operating modes, boost control, schedules, energy information, alerts or estimated remaining hot water.

For homes with rooftop solar PV, scheduling water heating through the middle of the day can increase solar self-consumption. Some systems simply use timers, while others provide dedicated solar, dry-contact or smart-grid integration.

WiFi does not make the refrigeration cycle more efficient by itself.

Smart controls can help the owner choose better operating times, but compressor efficiency, tank losses, climate conditions and system sizing remain major performance factors.

Refrigerants

R290, R134a, R513a & Heat Pump Refrigerant

Current Australian heat pumps use several refrigerants depending on the model and generation. R290 is increasingly common in newer products and has a very low global-warming potential. Other current or established systems may use refrigerants such as R134a or R513a.

Refrigerant should not be used as the only measure of product quality. The complete system design — compressor, heat exchanger, controls, tank insulation, climate range, recovery, warranty and service support — determines how suitable the heat pump is for the property.

Climate & Airflow

Do Heat Pumps Work in Cold Weather?

Heat pumps can operate in cool weather, but performance changes as ambient temperature falls. Different models have different minimum operating temperatures, defrost strategies and low-temperature performance. A system suitable for coastal Queensland may not automatically be the best choice for a colder inland or alpine location.

Airflow is equally important. The evaporator needs access to enough ambient air, and indoor installations require the manufacturer’s room-volume and ventilation conditions to be met. Restricted airflow can reduce performance and create unwanted cold-air recirculation.

Replacement Guide

Replacing an Electric Hot Water System with a Heat Pump

Replacing conventional electric storage with a heat pump is one of the most common upgrade paths. The existing location is a useful starting point, but heat pumps are often taller, need more airflow and require condensate drainage that a standard electric cylinder did not need.

1Identify Existing Demand

Record the old tank size and whether the household regularly runs out of hot water.

2Measure the Site

Check height, width, access, clearances, base, plumbing and available airflow.

3Check Services

Confirm electrical supply, condensate route, water pressure and required valve arrangement.

4Choose Capacity & Format

Select all-in-one or split and size the system around actual demand and recovery.

STCs & Government Incentives

Heat Pump Hot Water Rebates & STCs

Eligible air-source heat pumps can create Small-scale Technology Certificates under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The exact number depends on the registered model, installation date and location, and the system must meet the scheme requirements at the time of installation.

State or territory incentives may also be available separately. Rebate eligibility should be checked against the exact model and installation rather than assuming every heat pump receives the same benefit.

Warranty & Maintenance

Heat Pump Warranty, Service & Water Quality

Heat-pump warranties are often divided between the storage cylinder, refrigeration system, compressor, electrical controls, valves and labour. A headline cylinder warranty does not necessarily mean every component has the same coverage period.

Water quality also matters. Some systems use enamelled tanks with sacrificial or impressed-current anodes, while others use stainless steel. Follow the exact manufacturer water-quality limits and maintenance requirements for the model being installed.

Condensate

Keep the condensate route clear and investigate overflow or unexpected water around the heat-pump section.

Airflow

Keep the evaporator and air path free from obstructions that can restrict normal heat-pump operation.

Valves

Relief valves and other safety components need to suit the exact pressure requirements of the selected water heater.

Model Details

Keep the model and serial number for warranty, parts, troubleshooting and future replacement matching.

Repair or Replace?

Common Heat Pump Hot Water Problems

A heat pump that stops producing enough hot water does not automatically require full replacement. Power supply, timers, operating mode, temperature sensors, fan operation, compressor or refrigeration faults, boost-element faults and plumbing issues can all affect performance.

Runs Out of Hot Water

Check demand, tank size, recovery, schedules and whether the system is operating in a reduced-output mode.

Fan or Compressor Not Running

Controller settings, sensors, protection modes, electrical faults or refrigeration faults can all stop normal heat-pump operation.

Water Around the Unit

Normal condensate should be distinguished from relief-valve discharge, plumbing leaks or an actual cylinder leak.

Abnormal Noise

New rattling, vibration or major changes in fan/compressor sound can indicate mounting, debris or component issues that need investigation.

Heat pump buying questions
How does a heat pump hot water system work?
A heat pump hot water system uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat from the surrounding air into stored water. It uses electricity to run the compressor and fan rather than relying only on a resistive element to create heat directly.
What is the difference between all-in-one and split heat pumps?
There are two main layouts: all-in-one systems combine the tank and heat-pump section in one appliance, while split systems separate the storage tank from the compressor and fan unit. The better format depends on available space, noise placement, access and installation design.
What size heat pump hot water system do I need?
The right size depends on daily hot-water use, shower duration, baths, simultaneous use and recovery. As a practical guide, lower-demand homes often start around 180–220L, medium family demand around 250–280L, and higher-demand homes around 300L and above, but model recovery matters as much as litres.
Are heat pump hot water systems energy efficient?
Heat pumps are generally chosen because they can use substantially less electricity than conventional electric-resistance storage. Actual energy use depends on climate, water temperature, household demand, system efficiency, settings, operating mode and whether an electric boost element is used.
Are heat pump hot water systems noisy?
Heat pumps use a compressor and fan, so some sound is normal. Compare manufacturer dB(A) figures using similar measurement conditions, then consider distance from bedrooms, walls, fences and neighbours. Some models also provide Quiet or Silent operating modes.
What refrigerant do heat pump hot water systems use?
Many modern heat pumps use R290 refrigerant, while other current and legacy models use refrigerants such as R134a or R513a. Refrigerant is one specification among many; tank size, recovery, operating range, noise, warranty and installation suitability also matter.
Can a heat pump hot water system use rooftop solar power?
Many heat pumps can be scheduled to operate during daytime solar-PV generation. This can increase household solar self-consumption by storing solar-generated electricity as heat in the hot-water tank. Some models add app, timer, dry-contact or smart-grid controls.
Are heat pump hot water systems eligible for STCs or rebates?
Eligible air-source heat pumps may create Small-scale Technology Certificates. Eligibility depends on the exact registered model, installation date, location and current scheme requirements. State and territory incentives may also have separate rules.
Can a heat pump replace an electric hot water system?
A heat pump can often replace conventional electric storage where there is enough space, airflow, condensate drainage and suitable electrical supply. The new capacity should be selected from actual household demand rather than automatically matching the old cylinder litres.
What warranty does a heat pump hot water system have?
Heat-pump warranty varies by brand and model and may separate coverage for the cylinder, refrigeration system, compressor, electrical parts, labour and valves. Compare the exact warranty terms and service requirements for the product being considered.
