Buy the Rheem AmbiPower 280e online from Hot Water Outlet as a supply-only hot water system. This is the hardwired Wi-Fi model, not the 10A plug-in version.
What Is the Rheem AmbiPower 280e?
The Rheem AmbiPower 280e 551E280R5NT is a 280-litre integrated air-source heat pump water heater. It captures heat energy from the surrounding air and transfers that heat into stored water, reducing reliance on direct electrical resistance heating.
Unlike a conventional electric storage hot water system, which uses an electric element as its primary heat source, the AmbiPower 280e uses a refrigeration-based heat pump cycle for efficient water heating. Its additional 2.4kW electric element provides backup heating support when required.
This particular version includes EcoNet Wi-Fi technology, allowing compatible smartphone access to hot water information, heating schedules, operating modes and notifications.
Rheem positions the AmbiPower 280e as an energy-efficient alternative to a similar-sized electric storage water heater. Because it extracts heat from the surrounding air, the system does not require direct sunlight or roof-mounted solar collectors.
Why Choose the Rheem AmbiPower 280e Wi-Fi?
Efficient Heat Pump Technology
The system uses ambient air to heat stored water and has a manufacturer-stated average COP of 5.2 at 19°C test conditions. This provides an energy-efficient alternative to a traditional electric storage water heater.
2.4kW Electric Backup Element
The hardwired configuration includes a 2.4kW backup element. This provides additional electric heating support in operating conditions where heat pump heating alone is insufficient or backup heating is required.
EcoNet Wi-Fi Connectivity
Rheem EcoNet technology provides compatible smartphone access to energy-use information, preferred heating schedules, Holiday/Vacation and Solar modes, hot water availability and system alerts.
280L Hot Water Storage
The 280L tank is designed for households with regular hot water demand. Rheem recommends the range for up to six people under its stated usage assumptions.
R290 Refrigerant
The AmbiPower 280e uses R290 natural refrigerant, which Rheem identifies as an ultra-low-global-warming-potential refrigerant compared with many conventional refrigerants.
Advanced Microchannel Heating
Rheem's wraparound microchannel heating technology increases heat-transfer contact around the cylinder and is designed to support uniform, efficient water heating.
Cold Climate Operation
Rheem specifies a heat pump operating range from -6°C to +43°C. Electric element support is available under conditions specified in the manufacturer's operating instructions.
LED Touchscreen Controls
The integrated LED touchscreen provides local control and operating information, complementing the additional connected functionality available through EcoNet.

How Energy Efficient Is the AmbiPower 280e?
The Rheem AmbiPower 280e uses a heat pump cycle to extract energy from the surrounding air. As a result, it can provide more heat energy to stored water than the electrical energy used by the heat pump under suitable conditions.
Rheem states an average COP of 5.2 at 19°C ambient test conditions over the heating cycle. COP is a measure of the ratio of heat delivered to electrical energy consumed, not a fixed efficiency that applies in every climate or operating condition.
Rheem also reports potential water-heating energy savings of up to 73.9% in Australian climate Zone 3 compared with a similar-sized electric water heater under its specified TRNSYS modelling assumptions.
Actual electricity use and cost savings will vary with weather, incoming water temperature, hot water demand, operating schedules, electricity tariffs and the system being replaced.
The manufacturer's 73.9% figure refers to modelled water-heating energy consumption under specified conditions. It is not a guaranteed reduction in total household electricity bills.
Rheem EcoNet Wi-Fi Hot Water Control
One of the key differences between this model and a conventional non-connected hot water system is Rheem EcoNet Wi-Fi functionality.
When correctly connected to a compatible home network and smartphone, the EcoNet app provides additional ways to understand and manage the hot water system.
Energy-Use Monitoring
Access hot water energy-use information through the EcoNet app.
Preferred Heating Schedules
Set supported heating schedules to better match planned hot water usage.
Operating Modes
Access supported operating modes including Holiday/Vacation and Solar.
Hot Water Information and Alerts
Check hot water availability and receive supported notifications through the app.
App features depend on the compatible device, network connectivity, app availability and EcoNet configuration. Wi-Fi functionality does not replace the local touchscreen controls.
Hardwired 2.4kW vs 10A Plug-In AmbiPower 280e
The Rheem AmbiPower 280e Wi-Fi range includes two electrical configurations. Although both use 280L heat pump storage and EcoNet Wi-Fi connectivity, their backup element and electrical connection requirements differ.
| Feature | 2.4kW Hardwired Wi-Fi | 1.5kW Plug-In Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Model | 551E280R5NT | 551E280R3PT |
| Tank Capacity | 280L | 280L |
| Electrical Connection | Hardwired | 10A plug and lead |
| Backup Element | 2.4kW | 1.5kW |
| Recommended Circuit | 15A | 10A |
| Maximum Rated Input at 240V | 3100W | 2200W |
| EcoNet Wi-Fi | Yes | Yes |
Choose this version when you specifically require the 2.4kW hardwired Wi-Fi model. Do not assume it can be connected to a standard 10A power point. The electrical arrangement must meet Rheem's requirements.
The 2.4kW backup element also has a higher rated electric-element recovery capacity than the 1.5kW plug-in alternative. This difference relates to electric boost operation and should not be confused with the normal heat pump's efficiency or recovery performance.
Is the Rheem AmbiPower 280e Right for Your Home?
The AmbiPower 280e can be a suitable choice for households comparing larger electric hot water systems and looking for an efficient heat pump alternative with connected controls.
Medium to Larger Households
The 280L capacity may suit regular family hot water demand. Rheem's recommendation of up to six people assumes seven-minute showers at 42°C mixed-water temperature, with hot-water-using appliances also contributing to demand.
Electric Storage Replacements
The AmbiPower 280e can be compared with existing medium-to-large electric storage water heaters where the property's electrical supply, space and other requirements suit the selected heat pump.
Homes Wanting Smart Controls
The Wi-Fi version is relevant for buyers who want heating schedules, app-based energy information, operating modes and notifications instead of relying solely on controls at the unit.
Homes Without Solar Hot Water Panels
The system operates using ambient air rather than direct sunlight. It can be considered where a roof-mounted solar hot water system is not the preferred technology.
Household suitability depends on actual hot water demand, climate, electricity availability, property layout and product requirements. A capacity recommendation should not be treated as a guarantee that the system will meet every household's usage pattern.
What to Check Before Buying the Rheem 280e
The Rheem AmbiPower 280e is a substantial integrated heat pump system. Before purchasing, it is important to compare the selected unit with the available property space and existing services.
Allow for the 1832mm height, 696mm tank width and 725mm overall depth, plus manufacturer-specified clearance and access requirements.
This is the 2.4kW hardwired version. Rheem specifies a recommended 15A electrical circuit, rather than the 10A plug-and-lead configuration.
The heat pump requires appropriate air inlet and outlet clearances. Restricted airflow can affect performance, so compare the proposed location with Rheem's current drawings.
Check condensate drainage, Rp 3/4 water connections, pressure requirements and any valves or fittings required for the particular property.
The manufacturer lists a 135kg cartoned weight and a 402kg full weight. Consider delivery access, handling arrangements and a suitable supporting location.
Rheem offers standard and Blue Anode variants. The correct anode depends on the water chemistry, and warranty conditions apply.
Model 551E280R5NT is the standard hardwired Wi-Fi model. The separate Blue Anode version is 551E280R5NT/BL. These should not be treated as identical product codes.
Designed for Australian Conditions
Rheem manufactures the AmbiPower 280e in Australia and describes the system as designed and tested for Australian conditions.
The system incorporates a protected enamel-lined cylinder using Rheem's Ultranamel coating, wraparound microchannel heat transfer technology, a side-fan arrangement, a coated-steel external shell and an LED touchscreen controller.
Rheem also specifies operation across a broad ambient temperature range. Actual performance and suitability depend on the chosen location, water supply, appropriate clearances and compliance with manufacturer requirements.

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
