A hot water system is one of the highest-use appliances in an Australian home, and the right replacement is not simply the cheapest tank with the same litre number. Electric storage, heat pumps, gas continuous flow and gas storage all heat water differently and have different sizing, energy, space and connection requirements.

Use this guide to compare the main system types, then open the dedicated electric, heat pump, gas or instant gas collections for deeper model comparisons.

Compare Hot Water Systems by Type

Electric, Heat Pump, Gas Storage & Instant Gas Hot Water Systems

The best starting point is the energy source and system format already available at the property. Each hot water type has a different balance of purchase price, running energy, recovery, physical space and replacement complexity.

Hot Water System Buying Guide

How to Choose a Hot Water System

Start with the property, not the brochure. Existing energy supply, household demand, available space and connection layout usually eliminate unsuitable options quickly. After that, compare the systems that genuinely fit the site.

1Energy Source

Check electricity, Natural Gas, LPG, rooftop solar PV and any existing controlled-load supply.

2System Type

Choose storage, continuous flow or heat pump based on the site and preferred technology.

3Demand

Size around showers, baths, bathrooms, simultaneous use and daily hot-water habits.

4Site & Connections

Measure dimensions, pressure, pipe locations, power, gas and installation clearances.

5Compare Models

Then compare price, recovery, efficiency, warranty, delivery and required accessories.

Hot Water System Sizing

What Size Hot Water System Do I Need?

Storage hot water is usually discussed in litres, while continuous-flow gas is usually compared by litres per minute. Neither number should be used by itself. Recovery rate, heating window and actual household demand can make two systems with similar headline capacity perform very differently.

For storage sizing, a practical starting guide is around 40L of hot water per person per day for light use, 50L for average use, 65L for high use and 80L for very heavy use. Long showers, baths, high-flow fixtures and multiple bathrooms can move a household well above the average.

SystemMain sizing measureWhat changes the answerCommon comparison points
Electric StorageTank litres + element recoveryTariff window, element kW, shower use and stored reserve.50L, 80L, 125L, 160L, 250L, 315L, 400L.
Heat PumpTank litres + heat-pump recoveryAmbient conditions, compressor output, boost element and schedule.180L–220L, 250L–280L, 300L+.
Instant GasL/min at a specified temperature riseIncoming water temperature and simultaneous fixture flow.16L, 20L and 26L classes.
Gas StorageTank litres + burner recoveryBurner input, first-hour delivery and peak household demand.135L, 170L and high-recovery premium systems.
Do not automatically replace litre-for-litre.

If the old hot water system regularly ran out, was oversized, used a different tariff or used a different heating technology, matching the old tank size can repeat the wrong sizing decision.

Energy & Running Cost

Which Hot Water Systems Use the Least Energy?

Australian Government energy guidance identifies heat pump and solar hot water as high-efficiency options. Heat pumps use a refrigeration cycle to move ambient heat into the water and can use substantially less electricity than conventional electric resistance storage. Solar hot water uses direct solar heat with backup energy when required.

Conventional electric storage remains simple and widely available and can work particularly well when heating is timed around suitable electricity tariffs or rooftop solar PV. Gas systems may still be practical where a property already has a suitable gas supply and is replacing an existing gas appliance.

Electric Storage

Simple, quiet and generally lower in upfront complexity. Running cost depends heavily on element use, tariff and whether daytime solar generation can be used.

Heat Pump

Higher purchase complexity but lower electricity consumption for water heating under suitable operating conditions.

Instant Gas

Only burns gas while hot water is being drawn, with no large tank of water held hot between uses.

Gas Storage

Combines stored reserve with fast burner recovery. Running cost depends on gas price, tank losses, usage and model efficiency.

Storage vs Continuous Flow

Should I Choose a Storage or Continuous-Flow Hot Water System?

Storage systems heat water and keep it ready in a tank. This includes electric storage, most heat pumps, gas storage and solar storage. Continuous-flow systems heat water as it is needed and are most commonly seen in residential gas hot water.

FeatureStorage Hot WaterContinuous Flow
How capacity is describedTank litres plus recovery.Flow rate plus temperature rise.
Stored reserveHas a finite volume of heated water ready to use.No large stored reserve; heats while demand continues.
Physical spaceRequires room for a storage cylinder.Often uses a compact wall-mounted appliance.
Peak demandCan draw quickly from the stored tank.Must remain within the appliance’s instantaneous heating capacity.
Standby lossSome heat is lost from stored hot water over time.Avoids storage-tank standing heat loss.
Hot Water Brands

Compare Hot Water System Brands

Hot Water Outlet stocks established and specialist hot water brands across electric, gas and heat-pump technologies. Brand is useful for narrowing the range, but compare the exact model because tank material, element options, refrigerant, recovery, warranty and dimensions can differ significantly within one manufacturer.

Hot Water Replacement

Replacing a Hot Water System

When a hot water system fails, the fastest route is usually to identify exactly what is already installed before comparing alternatives. A like-for-like replacement can reduce changes, but upgrading technology or capacity may make sense when the existing system no longer suits the household.

1Brand & Model

Photograph the data plate so the existing specifications can be checked accurately.

2Energy Type

Identify electric, heat pump, Natural Gas, LPG or solar hot water.

3Capacity

Record storage litres or continuous-flow L/min and whether the old unit met demand.

4Connections

Measure dimensions and record hot, cold, gas, electrical and valve positions.

5Choose the Path

Decide whether to match the old system or deliberately change type, size or efficiency.

Pressure, Connections & Valves

What Should I Check Before Ordering a Hot Water System?

System capacity is only one part of compatibility. Check the pressure rating, required valves, hot and cold connection positions, inlet and outlet sizes, electrical supply, gas type where applicable, approved installation location and available space.

Storage water heaters use pressure and temperature relief protection and can require additional pressure, expansion and temperature-control valves depending on the system and installation. These parts need to match the exact water heater rather than simply being selected by thread size.

Pressure Rating

Compare the new cylinder’s pressure specification with the required PTR, pressure-control and expansion components.

Connection Layout

Hot and cold connection heights and sides vary between brands and models and can affect replacement pipework.

Electrical Supply

Check element kW, plug-in versus hardwired heat pumps, controlled-load supply and any required circuit changes.

Gas Supply

Confirm Natural Gas or LPG and make sure the gas supply and pipework suit the required appliance input.

Hot Water Temperature

Storage Temperature & Safe Delivery

Australian Government guidance recommends storing hot water at 60°C in storage systems to help manage bacterial risk. The temperature stored in the cylinder and the temperature delivered to fixtures are separate issues. Plumbing systems can use suitable temperature-control devices where required to limit delivered water temperature.

Solar PV, STCs & Rebates

Hot Water Systems for Solar-PV Homes

Hot water can be an effective way to use daytime rooftop-solar generation. Conventional electric storage can be scheduled to heat during the day where the electrical arrangement allows it, while many modern heat pumps include timers, WiFi or solar-friendly operating modes.

Eligible heat-pump and solar hot water systems may also create Small-scale Technology Certificates. State and territory incentives can have separate eligibility rules, so rebates should always be checked against the exact model, location and current scheme.

Hot water system buying questions
What types of hot water systems are available?
The main residential hot water system types are electric storage, heat pump, gas continuous flow, gas storage and solar hot water. The right choice depends on available energy, household hot-water demand, site space, climate, existing connections, purchase budget and expected running cost.
What is the difference between storage and continuous-flow hot water?
Storage hot water systems heat and hold water in an insulated tank. Continuous-flow systems heat water when it is required instead of storing a large volume. Storage is generally sized in litres; continuous flow is usually compared by flow rate and temperature rise.
What size hot water system do I need?
The correct size depends on actual hot-water use, shower length, baths, number of bathrooms, simultaneous demand and the system’s recovery. For storage systems, litres alone do not tell the full story because electric element output, gas burner recovery and heat-pump output differ between models.
What is the difference between electric and heat pump hot water?
Electric storage uses an electric resistance element and is simple, quiet and available across a wide range of tank sizes. Heat pumps also use electricity but move heat from surrounding air into the water, reducing electricity consumption compared with conventional resistance storage under suitable conditions.
What is the difference between instant gas and gas storage hot water?
Gas continuous-flow systems heat water on demand and are sized around flow rate and temperature rise. Gas-storage systems keep a tank hot and combine stored litres with burner recovery. Both must match the property’s Natural Gas or LPG supply.
Are heat pump hot water systems worth considering?
Heat pumps generally have higher upfront cost than standard electric storage but can reduce electricity used for water heating. Their suitability also depends on airflow, noise, climate, recovery, electrical supply, condensate drainage and available space.
What should I check before replacing a hot water system?
For a replacement, record the existing brand, model, energy source, tank litres or flow rate, gas type where relevant, element or electrical requirements, pressure rating, dimensions and hot/cold connection positions before ordering a new system.
What temperature should a storage hot water system be set to?
Storage water heaters should store water hot enough to manage bacterial risk. Australian Government guidance recommends a 60°C thermostat setting for storage hot water. Delivery temperatures to applicable fixtures may be controlled separately by the plumbing installation.
Are hot water systems eligible for rebates or STCs?
Heat pump and eligible solar hot water systems may qualify for Small-scale Technology Certificates, while other state or territory incentives can have separate rules. Eligibility depends on the exact product, location, installation date and current scheme requirements.
What warranty does a hot water system have?
Warranty varies by brand, technology and model. Cylinder, compressor, heat exchanger, burner, element, electrical parts, valves and labour may all have different coverage periods and conditions, so compare the exact warranty for the system being considered.
