About the Rheem Stellar 330 Natural Gas Water Heater
The Rheem Stellar 330 is a high-recovery natural gas storage hot water system designed for family households wanting dependable stored hot water and strong recovery as the supply is used.
Part of Rheem's premium Stellar gas storage range, model 850330 combines a relatively compact 130L storage cylinder with rapid gas heating performance to deliver a published first-hour capacity of 330L.
Unlike a continuous flow system, which heats water only as it passes through the appliance, the Stellar 330 maintains a stored supply of heated water and uses its natural gas burner to replenish the supply after hot water is consumed.
Its high recovery capacity is particularly useful for households where several people shower in succession or where bathroom, kitchen and laundry hot water demand occurs close together.
Rheem identifies the Stellar 330 as a 5 Star gas energy efficient water heater, incorporating its patented Superflue® technology to help achieve its high recovery and gas efficiency.
The Stellar 330 also provides mains pressure hot water delivery, allowing suitable plumbing systems to supply several household outlets.
This water heater is Australian made and designed for outdoor installation.
This page covers the natural gas version of the Rheem Stellar 330. It must be connected to a compatible natural gas supply and should not be assumed to suit an LPG property.

Important capacity distinction: The Stellar 330 has a 130L physical storage cylinder. The 330L figure describes first-hour hot water capacity, combining stored hot water with the appliance's rapid recovery. It does not have a 330L storage tank.
Dimension note: Rheem's installation drawing includes additional measurements for the cabinet, gas inlet, water connections and relief valve. Confirm the complete manufacturer's drawing before purchasing for a restricted replacement location.
Specifications may change. Always confirm the exact model, gas configuration and current Rheem instructions before ordering.
Why Is the Rheem Stellar 330 Only a 130L Storage Tank?
One of the most important things to understand about the Rheem Stellar 330 is the difference between its storage capacity and first-hour capacity.
Rheem publishes three different performance figures:
130L Storage Capacity
The physical cylinder stores 130 litres of heated water for household use.
330L First-Hour Capacity
The system can provide a rated 330 litres of hot water over the first hour by combining stored water with its heating recovery.
200L/Hour Recovery
The gas burner can replace approximately 200 litres of heated water per hour under specified operating conditions.
45°C Temperature Rise
Rheem's published first-hour and recovery performance is based on a specified 45°C temperature rise.
First-hour capacity is a measure of how much hot water a storage system can deliver over an initial one-hour period when its storage and heating recovery are considered together.
This is different from the nominal storage capacity of the tank.
The Stellar 330 uses rapid natural gas recovery to replace hot water as it is consumed, helping it achieve a substantially higher first-hour rating than its physical storage volume.
The Rheem Stellar 330 stores 130 litres of water and has a rated first-hour delivery of 330 litres. When comparing gas storage models, consider both storage capacity and hourly recovery rather than looking only at the model name.
Rheem Stellar 330 First-Hour Hot Water Capacity
The Stellar 330 has a published 330L first-hour hot water capacity based on a 45°C temperature rise.
This high first-hour rating is a key benefit of Rheem's high-recovery gas storage design.
It is particularly relevant when several household members use hot water close together, such as during morning showers or evening bathing routines.
The system starts with a stored reserve of hot water and uses its natural gas burner to replace heat while hot water is consumed.
The result is strong hot water availability over the first hour, rather than performance being limited to the tank's 130L storage capacity alone.
Typical household demand that can benefit from good first-hour capacity includes:
- Several consecutive showers
- Family bathroom routines
- Kitchen and shower use occurring close together
- Bath filling in suitable household applications
- Laundry and household cleaning
- Periods of concentrated morning or evening use
Actual performance depends on incoming water temperature, thermostat settings, incoming water pressure, gas supply and the amount of hot water being drawn.
First-hour capacity is not a guarantee that 330 litres can be delivered instantaneously or at any selected temperature.
Rheem Stellar 330 200L/Hour Hot Water Recovery
The Rheem Stellar 330 has a published hot water recovery rate of 200 litres per hour.
Hot water recovery describes how quickly the appliance can replace heated water after the stored supply has been used.
The Stellar 330 uses natural gas to heat the storage cylinder, with Rheem's Superflue® technology helping the appliance achieve its high-recovery performance.
Fast recovery can be valuable when multiple occupants shower in a short period or when hot water is used across several household activities.
The manufacturer's rated recovery figure is based on specified temperature conditions and should not be treated as a fixed recovery rate for every property.
Recovery performance may vary with:
- Incoming cold water temperature
- Selected thermostat temperature
- Natural gas supply conditions
- Hot water draw-off rate
- Appliance condition and maintenance
- Water quality and operating conditions
For family homes, recovery performance can be just as important as the physical storage capacity when selecting a gas storage water heater.
Rheem Stellar 330 5 Star Gas Energy Rating
The Rheem Stellar 330 has a published 5 Star gas energy efficiency rating.
Rheem positions the Stellar range as a high-efficiency alternative to many older 3 Star and 4 Star gas storage water heaters.
The 5 Star rating indicates more efficient gas hot water performance under the applicable rating conditions.
Rheem's patented Superflue® technology forms part of the appliance's high-efficiency heating arrangement.
Actual gas running costs depend on:
- Natural gas usage and tariffs
- Daily hot water consumption
- Household size
- Shower duration and flow rates
- Stored water temperature
- Incoming water temperature
- Gas supply and installation conditions
- Appliance age and maintenance
Replacing an older, less efficient gas storage water heater with a higher-rated model may reduce energy consumption, but actual savings depend on household conditions.
The energy rating does not guarantee a particular saving on natural gas bills.
Rheem Stellar Superflue® Technology
The Stellar 330 uses patented Rheem Superflue® technology.
Superflue® is one of the defining features of the Rheem Stellar high-recovery gas storage range.
The technology is designed to improve heat transfer efficiency and support strong hot water recovery from the natural gas burner.
This contributes to the Stellar 330's combination of:
- 5 Star gas energy efficiency
- 200L/hour hot water recovery
- 330L first-hour hot water capacity
- Compact 130L storage capacity
- Performance suitable for selected family households
These features help distinguish the Stellar 330 from lower-efficiency conventional gas storage water heaters.
Rheem Stellar 330 Gas Storage vs Continuous Flow Hot Water
The Rheem Stellar 330 is a gas storage water heater, not a gas continuous flow system.
Both types of hot water system can suit natural gas households, but they operate differently.
Rheem Stellar 330 Gas Storage
- Stores 130L of heated water
- Provides 330L rated first-hour capacity
- Recovers hot water at 200L/hour
- Uses a natural gas burner
- Provides mains pressure delivery
- Designed for outdoor installation
Natural Gas Continuous Flow
- Heats water when a tap is opened
- Does not use a large hot water storage cylinder
- Performance is rated in litres per minute
- Requires suitable gas supply capacity
- May offer compact wall-mounted options
- Installation requirements depend on the model
The Stellar 330 may appeal to households that prefer the operation of gas storage hot water and want high recovery without changing system type.
Continuous flow systems may appeal to households wanting to avoid a storage cylinder and heat water according to flow demand.
The better choice depends on the existing installation, household hot water usage, gas supply, available space and budget.
Changing from gas storage to continuous flow may involve additional gas, plumbing and electrical requirements.
How Many People Is the Rheem Stellar 330 Suitable For?
The Rheem Stellar 330 is designed for family hot water demand.
Rheem's plumber specification guide identifies the Stellar 330 as suitable for approximately 3–5 people under its stated conditions.
Rheem's consumer product listing also provides guidance for up to six people under its specified shower and thermostat assumptions.
The difference reflects the importance of how household sizing is calculated.
Rheem's consumer guidance uses assumptions including seven-minute showers, mixed water temperature of 42°C, moderate climate and the thermostat at its maximum setting.
Actual suitability depends on:
- Number of occupants
- Shower duration and frequency
- Number of bathrooms
- Bath usage
- Simultaneous hot water demand
- Kitchen and laundry hot water use
- Incoming cold water temperature
- Thermostat temperature setting
- Water pressure and fixture flow rates
- Hot water use during peak household periods
Homes with very high simultaneous demand should have their hot water requirements assessed before choosing the Stellar 330.
Rheem provides household sizing guidance based on defined usage conditions. The Stellar 330's suitability should be assessed using the home's actual shower habits, hot water demand and operating conditions rather than the number of residents alone.
Rheem Stellar 330 Mains Pressure Hot Water
The Stellar 330 is designed to provide mains pressure hot water to compatible household plumbing systems.
This can help deliver hot water to several outlets, such as showers, kitchen taps and laundry fixtures, where the incoming supply and pipework are suitable.
Mains pressure delivery can be useful for family homes with more than one bathroom or several hot water outlets.
However, the ability to operate multiple outlets depends on:
- Incoming water pressure
- Water pipe sizing and condition
- Fixture flow rates
- Tempering and pressure-control valves
- Simultaneous hot water consumption
- Available stored hot water and recovery capacity
Where several outlets draw hot water at once, the stored supply may be consumed more quickly than when fixtures operate individually.
Rheem Stellar 330 Natural Gas Consumption and Supply
Rheem lists gas consumption of 42 MJ/hour for the Stellar 330 model 850330.
The appliance must be connected to a natural gas supply capable of supporting its rated operating requirements.
Before ordering, an appropriately licensed gas fitter should confirm:
- Availability of mains natural gas
- Natural gas meter capacity
- Gas supply pressure
- Existing pipe sizing
- Length and condition of gas pipework
- Other gas appliances sharing the supply
- Gas isolation and connection requirements
- Suitability of the proposed outdoor location
- Applicable gas fitting standards
Having an existing natural gas water heater does not automatically confirm that the current pipework and connections are suitable for every replacement model.
The Rheem Stellar 330 model 850330 is a natural gas appliance. Gas type, meter capacity, pipe sizing and operating pressure must be confirmed by an appropriately licensed gas fitter before installation.
Is the Rheem Stellar 330 Natural Gas or LPG?
The Rheem Stellar 330 model 850330 covered on this page is the natural gas configuration.
It is intended for properties connected to a compatible natural gas supply.
Rheem's manufacturer documentation identifies the Stellar 330 as a natural gas model.
It should not be connected to LPG or propane unless a separate manufacturer-approved appliance configuration and applicable requirements specifically permit that arrangement.
Customers with LPG should select a water heater approved for their fuel supply rather than assuming that the Stellar 330 is interchangeable.
Always have the gas type verified by a licensed gas fitter before purchasing.
Rheem Stellar 330 Water Pressure and Valve Specifications
The Rheem Stellar 330 has published pressure limits and valve settings that must be considered when selecting a replacement gas storage water heater.
| Requirement | Rheem Specification |
|---|---|
| Temperature Pressure Relief Valve | 1400 kPa |
| Expansion Control Valve Setting | 1200 kPa |
| Maximum Supply Pressure With ECV | 960 kPa |
| Maximum Supply Pressure Without ECV | 1120 kPa |
| Hot and Cold Water Connections | Rp 3/4 |
| Gas Connection | Rp 1/2 |
Incoming water pressure must comply with the manufacturer's requirements.
Where pressure is excessive, appropriate pressure control may be necessary.
An expansion control valve may also be required depending on the water supply conditions and applicable installation rules.
The relief valve setting is not the same as the maximum permitted incoming water pressure.
A licensed plumber should confirm the correct water pressure, valves and discharge arrangements before connecting the Stellar 330.
Rheem Stellar 330 Piezo Ignition and Permanent Pilot
The Rheem Stellar 330 uses a piezo ignition system and permanent pilot flame.
Rheem's owner documentation explains that the pilot is ignited using a piezo push-button igniter.
Once the pilot is operating, it is used to ignite the main natural gas burner automatically when the thermostat calls for heat.
The main burner heats the water in the storage cylinder and shuts off when the selected temperature is reached.
This differs from many modern electronic continuous flow gas water heaters, which use electrical ignition and electronic water-flow sensing.
Rheem's Stellar 330 owner instructions describe its gas-control and piezo-pilot operating system rather than an electronically ignited continuous-flow arrangement.
Follow Rheem's current owner instructions for safe operation. Gas controls and servicing should only be handled in accordance with the manufacturer's safety directions and by appropriately qualified personnel where required.
Rheem Stellar 330 Outdoor Installation Only
The Rheem Stellar 330 model 850330 is designed for outdoor installation.
It must not be installed inside a building or other enclosed location unless a different manufacturer-approved appliance is selected specifically for that application.
The outdoor location must comply with Rheem's current installation instructions and applicable gas fitting and plumbing requirements.
Important site considerations include:
- Outdoor ventilation and flue clearances
- Distance from building openings
- Gas supply connection suitability
- Hot and cold water connection locations
- Temperature pressure relief discharge
- Drainage and runoff arrangements
- Suitable supporting base
- Clearance for servicing
- Access for replacement and maintenance
- Applicable plumbing and gas compliance requirements
A new installation or relocation may require additional site preparation, pipework or compliance work.
Before purchasing, have the proposed location checked by an appropriately licensed installer.

Do not rely on the advertised 130L or 330L rating to determine the appliance's physical size. Compare Rheem's full dimension drawing, connection locations, relief valve position and outdoor clearances with the existing site.
Rheem Stellar 330 Twin Anode Corrosion Protection
The Rheem Stellar 330 includes two sacrificial anodes to help protect the storage cylinder against corrosion.
Rheem's manufacturer documentation identifies the cylinder as vitreous enamel lined, with the anodes providing additional corrosion protection.
Sacrificial anodes are designed to gradually deteriorate while helping protect the cylinder.
Their performance and service life can be affected by the chemistry of the water supply.
Rheem provides specific water-quality and anode-selection guidance in the owner and installation manual.
Routine inspection, appropriate replacement and correct anode selection can help support long-term cylinder performance.
Customers should review the current manufacturer warranty and maintenance requirements, particularly where bore water, softened water or other non-standard supplies are used.
Rheem Stellar 330 Maintenance Requirements
Like other gas storage water heaters, the Rheem Stellar 330 requires appropriate ongoing maintenance to support safe operation and long-term service life.
Rheem recommends a major service during the fifth year after installation.
The manufacturer's service guidance includes checks of:
- Gas burner operation
- Pilot igniter and gas controls
- Gas supply pressure
- Temperature pressure relief valve
- Expansion control valve where installed
- Storage cylinder anodes
- Water connections
- General appliance condition
Rheem also publishes specific anode inspection and replacement guidance for different water supplies.
Failure to maintain the appliance in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions may affect warranty eligibility.
Maintenance and servicing should be arranged through appropriately qualified service personnel.
Rheem Stellar 330 vs Standard Gas Storage Hot Water
The Stellar 330 is designed to provide higher efficiency and recovery performance than many older, lower-efficiency gas storage water heaters.
| Comparison | Rheem Stellar 330 | Older Standard Gas Storage |
|---|---|---|
| System Type | Natural gas storage | Gas storage |
| Energy Rating | 5 Star | Varies; many older units are 3 or 4 Star |
| Stored Capacity | 130L | Depends on model |

| Hourly Recovery | 200L/hour | Depends on model |
| Heating Technology | Rheem Superflue® | Depends on model |
| Outdoor Installation | Yes | Depends on model |
Compared with some older gas storage heaters, the Stellar 330 may provide higher recovery and improved gas efficiency.
However, replacement suitability depends on the exact existing appliance, gas supply, household hot water demand and available installation space.
A larger physical storage tank does not always mean a higher first-hour hot water capacity, because burner recovery can significantly affect overall performance.
Rheem Stellar 330 vs Rheem 4 Star 170L Gas Storage
Customers replacing a traditional gas storage water heater may compare the Rheem Stellar 330 with a Rheem 4 Star 170L gas storage model.
These systems have different storage and recovery characteristics.

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
