Dux is an Australian hot-water brand dating back to 1915 and is now owned by Noritz. Its residential range spans Proflo electric storage, Prodigy gas storage, Always Hot continuous flow, Ecosmart heat pumps and Ecosmart solar. Many of Dux’s larger electric, gas-storage, solar and heat-pump water heaters are manufactured at its Southern Highlands facility.

Use this page as the main Dux hot water hub. Compare Proflo tank sizes, understand single- and twin-element electric storage, compare Ecosmart heat pumps, learn the difference between Prodigy gas storage and Always Hot continuous flow, check sizing and replacement considerations, and compare current Dux prices before ordering.

Dux Hot Water Range Explained

Dux covers several distinct hot-water technologies. Proflo is the electric storage family, Prodigy is gas storage, Always Hot is gas continuous flow, and Ecosmart covers heat-pump and solar products. Each family is sized differently, so litres, flow rate, recovery performance and site requirements need to be compared in the correct context.

Electric StorageDux Proflo

25L to 400L electric storage, including a 125L narrow-diameter model and selected twin-element options.

Heat PumpDux Ecosmart

200L and 285L integrated heat pumps plus the 270L Ecosmart Pro-Series.

Gas StorageDux Prodigy

135L and 170L gas storage in 4-star and 5-star versions.

Gas Continuous FlowDux Always Hot

Non-condensing 17–32L/min and condensing 21–26L/min on-demand gas systems.

SolarDux Ecosmart Solar

Electric- and gas-boosted solar systems using roof collectors and insulated storage.

Dux Electric Storage

Dux Proflo Electric Hot Water Systems

Dux Proflo electric storage covers 25L, 50L, 80L, 125L, 125L narrow-diameter, 160L, 250L, 315L and 400L capacities. The range is designed around mains-pressure storage, with element options varying by model. Larger Proflo tanks use commercial-grade enamel and sacrificial-anode protection, while selected capacities are available with hard-water options.

50L, 125L & 160L

These sizes cover compact to medium-demand applications. The 50L is useful where space and demand are limited, while 125L and 160L step up storage for households requiring more reserve.

250L, 315L & 400L

These larger Proflo models are common family-replacement sizes. Dux lists the 250L as single element, while 315L and 400L are available in single- and twin-element versions in the broader range.

125L Narrow Diameter

The 125X model uses a slimmer 490mm diameter and V-Fit dual-handed connections. It is designed for locations where a standard 125L footprint is difficult to accommodate.

Single vs Twin Element

Twin-element storage uses a second upper boost element to recover a smaller volume of usable hot water faster after heavy demand. The electrical supply and tariff need to suit the selected model.

Proflo replacement tip

Do not assume two tanks with the same litre rating share the same height, diameter or connection positions. Compare the exact model and available space before ordering.

Dux Heat Pump Hot Water

Dux Ecosmart Heat Pumps

Dux Ecosmart heat pumps use a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat from ambient air into stored water. The current family includes 200L and 285L Ecosmart models and the 270L Ecosmart Pro-Series. The 200L and 285L models use low-GWP R290 refrigerant and are designed and manufactured in Australia.

Ecosmart 200L

A compact integrated heat-pump option for lower to medium household demand. Dux lists a 2.5kW heating output, R290 refrigerant and a backup element for low-ambient and boost operation.

Ecosmart Pro 270L

The Pro-Series is the 270L high-recovery branch of the range. It is aimed at buyers wanting efficient heat-pump operation with strong recovery across changing weather conditions.

Ecosmart 285L

The 285L model increases stored capacity for households with greater daily demand while retaining an integrated heat-pump format.

What to Check Before Ordering

  • Tank capacity and household demand
  • Electrical connection
  • Airflow and clearances
  • Condensate drainage
  • Noise-sensitive locations
  • Recovery in local climate conditions
Dux Gas Storage

Dux Prodigy Gas Hot Water Systems

Dux Prodigy gas storage is available in 135L and 170L capacities with 4-star and 5-star models. The 4-star range focuses on strong recovery, while the 5-star range uses a flue-damper design to reduce heat loss. Both capacities are available in Natural Gas and propane/LPG versions.

Prodigy 135L

Dux positions the 135L Prodigy for roughly 2–4 people, depending on model and demand. It is useful for replacing older gas-storage systems where the existing gas supply and location remain suitable.

Prodigy 170L

The 170L increases stored reserve and is positioned for higher household demand. Dux lists the 170L 4- and 5-star versions for approximately 3–5 people.

4 Star vs 5 Star

The 5-star model uses improved insulation and a patented flue damper to reduce heat loss. The 4-star range remains focused on high recovery and practical replacement.

No Power Point Required

Current Prodigy gas-storage models use standing gas heating and Dux notes that they do not require a power point, so the system can continue to provide hot water during a power outage if gas and water remain available.

Dux Gas Continuous Flow

Dux Always Hot Continuous Flow

Dux Always Hot continuous-flow water heaters use Noritz gas technology and heat water as it is needed instead of storing a full tank. The non-condensing range includes 17, 21, 26 and 32L/min models, while condensing models are available in 21 and 26L/min.

Model typeFlow ratesWhat it meansKey checks
Non-condensing17, 21, 26, 32L/minSingle heat exchanger; broad range from compact to high-flow demand.Natural Gas/LPG, flow rate, 50°C or unlocked model, gas supply and outlets.
Condensing21, 26L/minDual heat exchanger captures additional exhaust heat for higher thermal efficiency.Gas type, condensate disposal, installation location and flow requirement.

Dux offers Natural Gas and LPG versions and temperature-locked 50°C or higher-temperature unlocked models across parts of the range. Choose flow rate based on simultaneous outlet demand and incoming water temperature rather than household size alone.

Dux Solar Hot Water

Dux Ecosmart Solar Hot Water

Dux Ecosmart solar systems use roof-mounted collectors to capture solar energy and transfer it into an insulated storage tank. Electric-boosted systems use an electric element for backup during cloudy periods or high demand, while gas-boosted systems use a continuous-flow gas booster that only fires when additional heat is required.

Solar hot water needs to be selected as a complete system. Collector area, roof orientation, shading, tank capacity, booster type and household demand all matter, so it is not simply a like-for-like cylinder swap.

Dux Sizing Guide

What Size Dux Hot Water System Do I Need?

For storage systems, use actual hot-water demand rather than household size alone. A practical guide is around 40L per person per day for light use, 50L average, 65L high use and 80L very heavy use. Tariff and recovery then determine how much reserve is needed between heating periods. Gas continuous flow is sized differently and should be compared by L/min and simultaneous outlets.

40LLight use / person / dayShorter showers and lower overall hot-water demand.
50LAverage use / person / dayA practical starting point for ordinary storage sizing.
65LHigh use / person / dayLong showers, baths or frequent back-to-back use.
80LVery heavy use / person / dayUseful as a stress-test for unusually high demand.
Dux 250L vs 315L

A 250L can suit many average family households, while 315L provides additional stored reserve. The better option depends on daily usage, tariff, recovery, available space and whether the existing unit is already meeting demand.

Dux Replacement Guide

Replacing an Existing Dux Hot Water System

The simplest replacement usually keeps the same technology and energy source, then matches capacity, dimensions and connections as closely as practical. Moving to a different technology can still make sense, but it adds more installation checks.

1Identify the Old Model

Record model number, capacity, energy source, element/gas type and dimensions.

2Check Demand

Consider showers, baths, simultaneous use and whether the current system regularly runs out.

3Compare Connections

Check water, power or gas, valves, drainage, base, clearances and access.

4Choose the New Path

Stay like-for-like or compare heat pump, gas continuous flow or solar if priorities have changed.

Dux 250L to Dux 250L

Start with the current Proflo 250L, then compare height, diameter, element rating and tariff rather than assuming every 250L is a direct swap.

Dux 250L vs Dux 315L

Moving to 315L increases stored reserve but also changes physical size and standing heat loss. Upsize only when household demand justifies it.

Proflo to Ecosmart Heat Pump

This can reduce electricity use, but introduces airflow, condensate, acoustic, electrical and clearance requirements that a basic cylinder does not have.

Gas Storage to Always Hot

This removes the storage tank but changes sizing to L/min and can require changes to gas supply, power, pipework and appliance location.

Dimensions, Connections & Water Quality

Will the New Dux Suit the Existing Location?

Check the exact model rather than relying on capacity alone. Dux Proflo dimensions vary substantially across 80L, 125L, 160L, 250L, 315L and 400L tanks, and the 125L narrow model deliberately uses a different shape. Also check connection height, valve arrangement, drainage, electrical supply or gas type, service access and the path required to remove the old tank.

Dux publishes different anode options for average-to-hard and extremely hard water areas across parts of its electric and gas storage range. Water quality therefore matters when maintaining or replacing a Dux storage system.

Warranty, Anodes & Care

Dux Warranty & Maintenance

Dux warranty periods vary by product family and component. Current larger Proflo electric tanks list 10-year tank coverage with separate parts-and-labour periods, while smaller 25L/50L models list different tank coverage. Prodigy gas storage, Always Hot continuous flow and Ecosmart heat pumps also have their own warranty structures.

Proflo Anodes

Dux enamelled storage cylinders use sacrificial anodes as part of their corrosion-protection system. Dux publishes different replacement anodes for average-to-hard and extremely hard water conditions.

Always Hot Heat Exchanger

Dux continuous-flow warranty treats the heat exchanger separately from general parts and labour. Keep the exact model and serial number for service and warranty identification.

Heat Pump Components

Ecosmart heat pumps combine a storage cylinder, refrigeration components, controls and a backup element. Coverage can differ across these components.

Valves & Safety Components

Pressure and temperature relief valves are safety components. Continuous leakage, unusual discharge or failed pressure control should be assessed by a licensed plumber.

Repair or Replace?

Common Dux Hot Water Problems & Replacement Signs

A Dux system with no hot water does not automatically need replacement. Electric storage can have element, thermostat, tariff or power-supply faults; gas systems can have ignition or supply issues; heat pumps add refrigeration, sensor and control faults. A leaking cylinder, severe corrosion, repeated breakdowns or a system that no longer meets demand are stronger replacement indicators.

No Hot Water

Confirm whether the system has the expected electricity or gas supply. Licensed electrical, gas and refrigeration diagnostics should be handled by the appropriate trade.

Hot Water Runs Out

Storage capacity, recovery, tariff windows, failed elements or increased household demand can all reduce available hot water.

Water Around the Tank

Identify whether the source is a relief valve, connection or cylinder. A leaking tank body is a more serious replacement indicator than normal intermittent relief-valve discharge.

System Is Very Old

Age alone does not prove failure, but corrosion, repeated faults, poor recovery and cylinder leakage become more important as the system gets older.

Ordering from Hot Water Outlet

Buying a Dux Hot Water System Supply Only

Choose the Dux system first, then check delivery and add only the valves, pipework, fittings or accessories required for the job. For a replacement, the old model number, system type, capacity, energy source and a clear photo of the existing installation make product matching much easier.
