Stiebel Eltron Hot Water Systems
Compare Stiebel Eltron WWK and SHP-O heat pumps, three-phase instantaneous electric water heaters and compact point-of-use hot water systems by size, technology and current price.
Stiebel Eltron was founded in Berlin in 1924 by Dr Theodor Stiebel and began Australian operations in 1995. Hot water has been central to the brand from the beginning: the company developed an early small instantaneous water heater in 1927 and introduced its first hot-water heat pumps to Australia in 2006.
For Australian buyers, the main whole-home Stiebel Eltron products are the WWK 222/302 family and the newer SHP-O 200/300 Plus heat pumps. The brand also has a substantial electric instantaneous range for three-phase applications and compact SHC/SNU storage heaters for point-of-use sinks and basins. Use this page to understand which product family suits the job before comparing current prices.
Stiebel Eltron Hot Water Range Explained
Stiebel Eltron approaches hot water through several very different technologies. WWK and SHP-O are whole-home storage heat pumps, DHB-E/DHE/DCE-style products are electric continuous-flow water heaters, and SHC/SNU are small point-of-use storage units. They are not interchangeable categories and should be sized according to the job they are intended to do.
Established R134a heat-pump range in 220L and 302L, with standard and H-model recovery options.
Newer R290 heat pumps with app control, solar-PV integration and 200L or 300L tanks.
Compact electric continuous-flow systems for suitable single- or three-phase electrical supplies.
Small point-of-use storage heaters for sinks, basins and isolated fixtures.
WWK 222, WWK 222H, WWK 302 & WWK 302H
The WWK family is Stiebel Eltron’s established Australian heat-pump platform. It uses surrounding air as the primary heat source, an R134a refrigeration circuit, an enamelled steel cylinder and a maintenance-free impressed-current anode. The range is designed for Australian conditions and can operate down to approximately -5°C with active defrost.
WWK 222 and WWK 222H use a 220L cylinder. WWK 302 and WWK 302H use a 302L cylinder. The standard and H models share the same basic heat-pump platform, while H models add a 1.7kW smart element in the upper section of the cylinder to assist recovery when a large volume of hot water is used.
WWK 222 / 220L
The smaller WWK platform has a 220L nominal cylinder, 690mm diameter and 45dB(A) sound pressure at 1m under the manufacturer’s test method. It is often compared for smaller to medium family demand.
WWK 302 / 302L
The larger WWK uses the same 690mm diameter but a taller 302L cylinder. The extra stored volume suits higher daily or back-to-back demand where site height allows.
What the H Means
WWK 222H and 302H contain a 1.7kW smart element. When demand is high, it can assist the heat pump by heating approximately the upper 80L of the tank to improve hot-water recovery.
Active Defrost
WWK uses active defrost to manage frost at the evaporator in colder conditions. This allows the heat pump to keep operating at low ambient temperatures without relying on a conventional element in the standard models.
Choose based on demand and recovery. The standard model uses the heat pump only as its normal heating source. The H model adds element assistance for periods when hot water is drawn faster than the heat pump alone can recover it.
SHP-O 200 & SHP-O 300 Heat Pumps
SHP-O is the newer Stiebel Eltron residential heat-pump family. It uses low-GWP R290 refrigerant, a 1.5kW auxiliary heater, built-in WLAN connectivity for the MyStiebel app and SG Ready functionality for integration with compatible solar-PV or energy-management systems.
The SHP-O 200 Plus has 200L nominal capacity and the SHP-O 300 Plus has 300L. Both are designed for indoor or outdoor installation where the required clearances are met and use a standard 220–240V single-phase supply with a maximum operating current below 10A.
SHP-O 200 Plus
200L nominal storage, 650mm diameter and approximately 1478mm height. It is the more compact SHP-O for lower to medium household demand or installations where overall height matters.
SHP-O 300 Plus
300L nominal storage using the same 650mm diameter but a taller cylinder at approximately 1903mm. The additional stored volume provides more reserve for larger households.
MyStiebel App
Current SHP-O models can be monitored and controlled through the MyStiebel app. Functions include operating settings and timer control, with remote support features available through Stiebel Eltron’s connected service platform.
R290 Refrigerant
R290 has a very low global-warming potential compared with older common heat-pump refrigerants. The SHP-O range combines this refrigerant with a microchannel condenser mounted directly on the cylinder.
How Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump Hot Water Works
A fan draws ambient air across the evaporator. Refrigerant absorbs heat from that air, the compressor raises the refrigerant temperature, and the condenser transfers the heat into the stored water. This allows the system to deliver more heat energy to the water than the electrical energy consumed by the compressor under suitable conditions.
Solar PV Compatibility
WWK and SHP-O can be used with solar-PV strategies so water heating occurs when self-generated electricity is available. SHP-O adds SG Ready integration and app-based timing options.
Condensate
Heat pumps remove moisture from ambient air during operation, producing condensate. A suitable drainage route is part of a correct installation.
Indoor Installation
Stiebel Eltron specifies at least 13m³ of clear room volume for relevant indoor recirculation-air installations. Cold exhaust air and service access also need to be considered.
Noise
Heat pumps contain a fan and compressor, so placement matters. WWK uses an encased compressor design and is rated around 45dB(A) at 1m; SHP-O has its own model-specific sound data and should also be located thoughtfully.
Three-Phase Instantaneous Electric Hot Water
Stiebel Eltron has a long history in instantaneous electric water heating. Modern Australian products such as DHB-E LCD heat water only when flow is detected, so there is no large storage tank. This makes them compact, but the electrical demand is much higher than a normal storage water heater or heat pump.
The current DHB-E LCD family includes approximately 14.5kW, 19.4kW and 28kW models on three-phase 415V supplies. These are specialist electrical loads and should only be selected after confirming available supply capacity, circuit design, expected flow and temperature rise.
Heat pumps use a small electrical input over time to heat stored water. Three-phase instantaneous systems use very high electrical power only while water is flowing. The right choice depends on site electrical capacity, space and hot-water demand.
SHC & SNU Compact Storage Water Heaters
Stiebel Eltron also makes compact storage heaters for individual sinks, basins and isolated fixtures. SHC 10 AU and SHC 15 AU are mains-pressure units that can serve multiple nearby outlets and work with normal approved tapware. SNU 5 Plus and SNU 10 Plus are open-vented units intended for a single isolated sink and must use compatible non-pressurised tapware.
These products solve point-of-use problems such as long pipe runs and delayed hot water. They are not intended to replace a whole-house 200–300L heat-pump system.
Which Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump Size Do I Need?
Storage capacity should be based on actual hot-water demand rather than household size alone. A practical demand guide is around 40L per person per day for light use, 50L average, 65L high use and 80L very heavy use. Heat-pump recovery then determines how much reserve is needed during periods of heavy use.
The smaller WWK 222 or SHP-O 200 saves physical space and can suit moderate demand. WWK 302 or SHP-O 300 adds significantly more stored water for larger households or heavy back-to-back use. Recovery rate and user behaviour matter as much as tank volume.

Replacing an Existing Hot Water System with Stiebel Eltron
Stiebel Eltron heat pumps are commonly considered when replacing conventional electric storage or an older heat pump. A good replacement starts with the old tank size and household demand, then checks the proposed Stiebel model against available height, diameter, airflow, condensate drainage, water pressure and electrical supply.
Record capacity, energy source, model, dimensions and electrical arrangement.
Look at shower length, baths, household size and whether the current system runs out.
Measure height, diameter, service access, airflow and condensate route.
Compare WWK, SHP-O or a specialist instantaneous/point-of-use product for the actual job.
Old Electric Storage to WWK
WWK is a common upgrade path where the site can accommodate a 690mm-diameter heat pump and household demand suits 220L or 302L storage.
Old Electric Storage to SHP-O
SHP-O provides a newer R290 platform with 650mm diameter, app control and solar-PV integration. Compare 200L and 300L based on actual demand.
WWK to SHP-O
Do not assume identical dimensions or plumbing positions. The newer SHP-O has a different cylinder diameter, refrigeration system, controls and warranty structure.
Standard WWK to H Model
The H model is useful where recovery is the issue rather than total tank size. Its smart element can assist during heavy draw-off periods.
Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump Rebates
Eligible Stiebel Eltron heat pumps can create Small-scale Technology Certificates under the federal renewable-energy scheme when installed in accordance with current requirements. Stiebel Eltron publishes zone-based STC values for eligible WWK and SHP-O models, and some states have additional heat-pump incentives with their own rules.
The certificate count, market value and eligibility can change. Compare the total product and installation cost after any eligible incentive rather than choosing a model from the rebate amount alone.
Will a Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump Fit?
WWK models are approximately 690mm in diameter, with the 220L family around 1.55m tall and the 302L family around 1.92m tall. SHP-O narrows the cylinder to 650mm; the 200 is around 1.48m high and the 300 around 1.90m. Filled weights are substantial, so the base must support the operating weight.
Also check hot/cold connection positions, relief-valve drainage, condensate, required clearances and water pressure. WWK’s impressed-current anode is promoted for both hard and soft water within its specified conductivity range, while every model still needs to remain within the manufacturer’s water-quality limits.

Stiebel Eltron Warranty & Maintenance
Warranty depends on the exact product family. Current WWK domestic warranty separates cylinder/condenser coverage, sealed refrigeration-system coverage, electrical component coverage and the relief valve. SHP-O uses a different structure with longer cylinder/condenser and refrigeration coverage. Instantaneous electric and compact-storage products have their own warranty periods.
WWK Impressed-Current Anode
WWK uses a maintenance-free impressed-current anode rather than a conventional sacrificial anode. It still requires the system to remain within specified water-quality limits.
Condensate Maintenance
Stiebel Eltron recommends checking the WWK condensate drain and top of the condensate pan regularly for blockages. A clear drain is important for normal heat-pump operation.
SHP-O Connected Support
SHP-O can report faults through the app and supports connected service functions. This can help with monitoring and some diagnostic/support workflows.
Keep the Model & Serial Number
WWK 222, 222H, 302, 302H and SHP-O 200/300 use different parts and warranty structures. Keep the exact model and serial details for service and future replacement.
Common Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump Problems
A heat pump that is not producing enough hot water does not automatically need complete replacement. Operating mode, household demand, airflow, condensate blockage, sensors, controls, refrigeration faults and electrical issues can all affect performance. A leaking cylinder, major corrosion or repeated high-cost failures are stronger replacement indicators.
Hot Water Runs Out
Check whether demand has increased and whether the selected tank size is adequate. On WWK H models, smart-element operation may also affect recovery during heavy use.
Heat Pump Ices Up
Some frost in cold conditions can occur. WWK includes active defrost to manage evaporator icing; persistent abnormal icing or failed defrost needs diagnosis.
Condensate Overflow
A blocked or poorly routed condensate drain can cause water around the unit. Condensate should be distinguished from plumbing or cylinder leakage.
Abnormal Noise
Fan and compressor noise is normal, but new vibration, rattling or major changes in operating sound should be investigated.
