Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Storage Hot Water System
Buy the Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Storage Hot Water System online from Hot Water Outlet. The Rheem 347170P0 is an Australian-made outdoor gas storage water heater designed for homes using LPG or propane, with supply-only delivery options available in selected locations across Australia.
Featuring 170L storage capacity, 4 Star gas energy efficiency, mains pressure hot water delivery, two protective anodes and a 10-year cylinder warranty, this model is a practical replacement choice for households wanting to retain LPG gas storage hot water with a larger tank than the Rheem 135L model.
About the Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Water Heater
The Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Storage Water Heater belongs to Rheem's 347 Series of outdoor gas storage hot water systems.
This product is the LPG / propane version, model 347170P0, intended for homes with a compatible LPG gas supply rather than a natural gas connection.
It stores 170 litres of heated water in a storage cylinder and uses an LPG gas burner to restore the hot water supply as water is consumed.
Rheem lists the 170L range with a 4 Star energy efficiency classification, mains pressure hot water, two protective anodes, Australian manufacturing and a nominal 283L first-hour capacity under stated natural gas test conditions.
The larger 170L capacity makes this model worth considering for households with greater hot water demand than the smaller 135L gas storage range can comfortably meet.
It is designed for outdoor installation only and is a potential replacement for compatible existing LPG gas storage water heaters where the gas supply, plumbing, dimensions and outdoor clearances are suitable.
Buy Rheem 170L LPG Gas Hot Water Supply Only
Hot Water Outlet supplies the Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Storage Hot Water System as a supply-only product.
Customers can order the appliance online and arrange installation separately through an appropriately licensed plumber or gas fitter.
This option suits homeowners, tradespeople, landlords and property managers who have already organised installation or want to purchase a replacement appliance independently.
The supply-only price covers the selected hot water system. Installation, old system removal, disposal, additional valves, gas fitting work, gas pipework changes, plumbing alterations, drainage upgrades and compliance work are not included unless expressly stated or separately quoted.
Hot Water Outlet does not directly install gas hot water systems. In selected metro areas, customers may be able to request assistance obtaining installation quotes from independent licensed local installers after purchase.
Before ordering, confirm the appliance fuel configuration, outdoor installation space, connection requirements and delivery availability for your location.

This product page is for the Rheem 347170P0 LPG version.
Rheem 347170P0 — LPG
Designed for properties using a compatible LPG or propane gas supply, including suitable bottled LPG arrangements.
- Model: 347170P0
- Fuel: LPG / Propane
- Storage capacity: 170L
- Gas input: 26 MJ/hr
- Outdoor installation only
- 4 Star gas storage range
Rheem 347170N0 — Natural Gas

- Model: 347170N0
- Fuel: Natural Gas
- Storage capacity: 170L
- Gas input: 27 MJ/hr

The appliance must be configured and approved for the gas supplied to the property. Do not connect an LPG model to natural gas or a natural gas model to LPG. Confirm the appropriate fuel configuration and installation requirements with your licensed gas fitter before ordering.
How Does the Rheem 170L LPG Gas Storage System Work?
The Rheem 170L LPG gas storage system stores heated water in a cylinder ready for household use.
When a hot water tap is opened, hot water is supplied from the storage tank and replacement cold water enters the system.
The LPG burner operates according to the appliance's temperature controls to restore the stored hot water supply.
Gas storage systems are commonly compared using two measurements:
- Storage capacity: the amount of water physically held in the storage cylinder.
- Recovery rate: the amount of cold water that the burner can heat during a specified period under stated conditions.
A larger storage tank can provide more hot water before recovery becomes necessary, while a suitable burner recovery rate helps replenish the stored supply as household use continues.
Unlike a continuous flow gas water heater, the Rheem 170L holds heated water in storage rather than heating all water only as it passes through the appliance.
Rheem 170L LPG and 283L Nominal First-Hour Capacity
Rheem publishes a 283L nominal first-hour capacity for the 347170 gas storage range.
First-hour capacity is a measurement that combines the stored hot water volume with the additional hot water that the gas burner can recover during the first hour under specified test conditions.
The physical cylinder stores 170 litres. The published 283L figure represents storage plus recovery, not a 283L tank.
Rheem's brochure calculates first-hour capacity using natural gas at a 45°C temperature rise, based on a cold water temperature of 15°C.
Because this product uses LPG, its actual first-hour performance may differ from Rheem's natural gas test result.
For larger households or homes with consecutive showers, first-hour capacity can be useful when comparing systems of different storage sizes and recovery rates.
The storage cylinder holds 170 litres. Rheem's published 283L first-hour result includes burner recovery under natural gas test conditions. LPG performance, incoming water temperature, thermostat settings and household use can affect actual hot water availability.
Rheem 170L Gas Storage Recovery Rate
Rheem's current published technical information for the 347170 range lists a nominal recovery rate of 120 litres per hour at a 45°C temperature rise.
Recovery rate indicates how much water the system can reheat during a specified period under the manufacturer's test conditions.
This measurement matters when several people use hot water in a relatively short period.
For example, a household with consecutive showers may benefit from a water heater that can replenish stored hot water efficiently between periods of demand.
Actual LPG recovery can depend on gas supply conditions, incoming water temperature and appliance operation.
Customers comparing replacement gas storage systems should consider storage capacity, recovery rate and first-hour capacity together rather than relying on litres of storage alone.
Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Efficiency
The Rheem 347170P0 belongs to the Rheem 4 Star gas storage range.
Rheem markets the product as a 4 Star model, while its May 2025 domestic hot water brochure identifies the 170L variant with a 4.1-star gas energy rating.
The system is designed to offer improved gas efficiency compared with many older, lower-rated gas storage water heaters.
The LPG configuration has a published gas input of 26 MJ/hr.
Gas input describes the appliance's rated burner consumption while operating. It is not a statement that the system uses this amount of gas continuously every hour.
Actual running costs depend on:
- LPG gas pricing and supply arrangements
- Household hot water demand
- Number and length of showers
- Incoming cold water temperature
- Thermostat settings
- Standing storage heat losses
- Pipework condition and insulation
- Installation and maintenance conditions
The energy rating provides a useful basis for comparison but does not guarantee a particular reduction in household LPG bills.
Rheem 135L vs 170L LPG Gas Storage
Rheem offers both 135L and 170L models within its outdoor 4 Star gas storage range.
Both sizes are available in appropriate gas configurations, but they provide different storage capacities and first-hour performance.
| Specification | Rheem 135L | Rheem 170L |
|---|---|---|
| Model Family | 347135 | 347170 |
| Storage Capacity | 135L | 170L |
| First-Hour Capacity | 248L nominal | 283L nominal |
| Recovery Rate | 113L/hr | 120L/hr |
| LPG Input | 26 MJ/hr | 26 MJ/hr |
| Installation | Outdoor | Outdoor |
| Cylinder Warranty | 10 years* | 10 years* |
The first-hour and recovery figures above are based on Rheem's published range data, including natural gas test conditions. Propane performance may differ.
The key difference is stored capacity. The 170L model holds 35 litres more water than the 135L model and has a higher published nominal first-hour capacity.
The 135L model may be suitable where household hot water demand is lower or installation space is restricted, while the 170L model provides another option for households needing more stored hot water.
Always compare dimensions, fuel type and installation requirements before choosing between models.
*All warranties are subject to Rheem's published terms and conditions.
How Many People Is the Rheem 170L LPG Suitable For?
Rheem's published household sizing guidance for the 170L gas storage range varies with climate and hot water use.
Its May 2025 domestic hot water brochure lists approximately 4–6 people in a moderate climate and 3–5 people in a cool climate under the manufacturer's usage assumptions.
These recommendations use typical shower consumption assumptions and should be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee.
The household's actual requirements depend on:
- Number of people living in the home
- Number of bathrooms
- Shower duration
- Simultaneous hot water use
- Laundry and kitchen hot water demand
- Incoming cold water temperature
- Time between high-demand periods
The Rheem 170L can be a practical option to compare where the household needs more storage than a 135L system provides.
If your existing gas storage system has consistently supplied enough hot water, its capacity and recovery rating provide a useful reference. If the old system regularly ran out of hot water, compare larger capacities and different recovery rates before ordering.
Rheem 170L LPG Outdoor Installation Only
The Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Gas Storage Water Heater is designed for outdoor installation only.
It must be installed in an external location that meets Rheem's current installation requirements and applicable gas fitting and plumbing regulations.
Outdoor gas appliance positioning can be affected by nearby doors, windows, ventilation openings, walls and other building features.
Before ordering, have your licensed gas fitter confirm:
- The proposed location is suitable for outdoor gas storage.
- The property uses a compatible LPG supply.
- The gas regulator and pipework arrangements are appropriate.
- The gas supply can meet the appliance requirements.
- Required appliance clearances can be maintained.
- Hot and cold water connections are suitable.
- Water pressure and valves meet the required specifications.
- Relief valve discharge and drainage are appropriate.
- The cylinder can be supported in the proposed position.
- There is safe access for installation and future servicing.
The appliance must not be treated as an indoor gas storage water heater.
Relocating the new unit or changing from another hot water technology may require additional gas fitting, plumbing or compliance work.
Rheem 170L LPG Dimensions and Installation Space
The Rheem 347170 has a published overall height of 1868mm.
Rheem's technical drawing identifies a cabinet width of 422mm and an overall footprint-related dimension of 502mm.
The drawing also provides individual connection heights for the cold water inlet, hot water outlet, gas inlet and relief valve.
Before buying the Rheem 170L, compare the following:
- Overall height of the existing water heater
- Available width and footprint
- Access for delivery and positioning
- Hot water outlet location
- Cold water inlet location
- LPG gas inlet position
- Relief valve and drainage arrangement
- Required manufacturer clearances
- Access for servicing and future maintenance
Rheem identifies common fitting arrangements with many standard older 3 Star and 4 Star gas storage water heaters, which can be useful when comparing suitable replacements.
However, similar connections or dimensions do not guarantee that existing gas pipework, plumbing fittings or valves can be reused without alteration.
Is the Rheem 4 Star 170L LPG Right for Your Home?
The Rheem 347170P0 may suit customers replacing an existing outdoor LPG gas storage water heater where the property has compatible gas, water and installation arrangements.

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
