Vulcan Hot Water Systems
Compare Vulcan electric storage, DUOMAX electric and 4-Star gas storage systems by tank size, element or gas type, replacement suitability and current supply-only price.
Vulcan is a long-established Australian hot-water brand that became part of Rheem Australia in 1984. Today the brand is focused on practical storage hot water, with electric models from 50L to 400L and 4-Star gas storage in 135L and 170L. Vulcan water heaters are made within Rheem-owned and operated manufacturing facilities and supported through the wider Rheem service and spare-parts network.
Use this page as the main Vulcan hot-water hub. Compare standard and DUOMAX electric models, understand single- versus twin-element storage, choose the right capacity, compare Natural Gas and LPG storage, understand off-peak suitability and water-pressure requirements, and check current HWO prices before ordering.
Vulcan Hot Water Range Explained
Vulcan’s current Australian range is deliberately straightforward. Electric storage is available from compact 50L tanks through to 400L family systems. Gas storage is available in 135L and 170L 4-Star models. HWO also carries Vulcan DUOMAX electric products in several common capacities, so buyers replacing an existing unit should check the exact model code rather than relying on tank litres alone.

Alternative Vulcan electric listings across common capacities, with model-specific connections and specifications.
Outdoor gas storage available from the manufacturer in Natural Gas and propane versions.
Larger outdoor gas storage, with the current manufacturer range listed for Natural Gas.
Vulcan Electric Hot Water Systems
Vulcan electric water heaters use a vitreous-enamel-lined steel storage cylinder and electric heating element. The current manufacturer range spans 50L, 80L, 125L, 160L, 250L, 315L and 400L. They operate at mains pressure and are designed as practical replacement products for Australian homes, rentals and trade maintenance work.
50L & 80L
Compact electric storage for low hot-water demand and tighter spaces. The Vulcan 50L uses dual-handed connections and requires a continuous tariff in the manufacturer’s current specification.
125L & 160L
Smaller household storage capacities that step up from compact units without the footprint of a 250L or larger family tank.
250L & 315L
Common family-replacement capacities. The 315L adds stored reserve for higher demand and the broader range includes a twin-element 315L option.
400L
Large-capacity electric storage for households with heavy daily demand. Standard single-element and twin-element 400L models are part of the broader Vulcan range.
Vulcan’s current electric storage range is designed for indoor or outdoor installation where the site and drainage requirements are met. Indoor installation needs particular attention to safe overflow and property-damage protection.
Vulcan DUOMAX Electric Hot Water Systems
Hot Water Outlet carries DUOMAX alongside standard Vulcan electric systems. DUOMAX listings overlap with standard Vulcan in common capacities such as 50L, 125L, 160L, 250L, 315L and 400L. That makes it important to treat DUOMAX as an exact-model choice rather than assuming a DUOMAX and standard Vulcan tank of the same capacity are automatically identical.
When replacing a DUOMAX, use the model number from the old data plate where possible. Compare tank height and diameter, hot and cold connection arrangement, element rating, pressure settings and required valves before ordering.
Standard Vulcan vs DUOMAX
Both are Vulcan storage products and can share nominal capacity. The practical replacement question is whether the exact model’s dimensions, connections, element configuration and installation requirements match the existing site.
Why Model Codes Matter
Capacity tells you how much water the tank stores. It does not tell you every connection, fitting, power or physical dimension. Keep the full product code when matching an existing Vulcan or DUOMAX.
Single Element, Twin Element & Off-Peak Vulcan Systems
Most electric storage water heaters use one element to heat the cylinder. Selected larger Vulcan models are also available with twin elements. A twin-element system adds an upper boost element so a smaller portion of the cylinder can recover faster after heavy hot-water use.
Large storage tanks are commonly paired with controlled or off-peak electricity tariffs where available. The trade-off is that heating may only occur during certain periods, so the tank needs enough stored water to cover demand until the next heating window. A household with heavier use may need a larger tank, a boost arrangement or a different tariff strategy.
Single Element
Simpler heating arrangement and common across the Vulcan electric range. Recovery depends on element rating, tank size and when electricity is available.
Twin Element
Available in parts of the larger-capacity range, including 315L and 400L. The upper element can assist with faster recovery of usable hot water during high demand.
Vulcan 135L & 170L Gas Hot Water Systems
Vulcan’s current gas range is traditional outdoor storage rather than gas continuous flow. Both systems have a 4-Star gas energy rating and use a vitreous-enamel-lined storage cylinder with gas recovery. The 135L is available in Natural Gas and propane versions; the current 170L manufacturer model is listed for Natural Gas.
Vulcan 135L Gas
Vulcan positions the 135L for up to around five people under its stated moderate-climate assumptions. It uses 135L stored capacity with gas recovery and is designed for outdoor installation.
Vulcan 170L Gas
The 170L increases stored capacity and is positioned for up to around six people under the manufacturer’s stated assumptions. The current manufacturer listing is Natural Gas and outdoor-only.
Natural Gas vs LPG
Gas appliances are configured for a specific fuel. A Natural Gas Vulcan cannot simply be installed on LPG and vice versa. Always match the replacement to the property gas supply.
Legacy 170L LPG
Older Vulcan 170L LPG systems may still be encountered in the field. HWO can retain legacy product information for replacement matching even where the current manufacturer range has changed.
What Size Vulcan Hot Water System Do I Need?
Storage sizing should be based on actual household use rather than head count alone. A practical starting guide is around 40L per person per day for light use, 50L average, 65L high use and 80L very heavy use. Recovery rate and tariff then determine how much storage is needed between heating periods.
250L is a common family-size starting point, 315L adds reserve for heavier demand, and 400L is intended for very high stored-water requirements. The best choice depends on actual use, available space, tariff and recovery — not just the number of people in the home.
How the Main Vulcan Options Compare

Replacing an Existing Vulcan Hot Water System
The simplest replacement keeps the same energy source and similar capacity, then checks the exact model dimensions, connections and pressure requirements. Because Vulcan has standard electric, DUOMAX and gas-storage products, the model number is more useful than the brand name alone.
Record the model number, tank litres, electric or gas type and approximate age.
Consider household size, shower duration, baths and whether the old tank regularly runs out.
Check height, diameter, access, connections, pressure control, drainage and power or gas supply.
Stay like-for-like where practical or change capacity only when demand or site conditions justify it.
Vulcan 250L to Vulcan 250L
Start by comparing the current 250L standard and DUOMAX options with the old data plate, dimensions and connection layout.
Vulcan 250L to 315L
Upsizing adds stored reserve but increases physical size and standing heat loss. Check whether the household actually needs more capacity.
Vulcan 315L to 400L
A 400L is a significant storage step and requires more space and filled-weight support. It is mainly useful where 315L is genuinely insufficient.
Old Gas Storage to New Vulcan Gas
Match 135L/170L, Natural Gas/LPG, outdoor location, gas supply and connection requirements before ordering.
What Should Be Checked Before a Vulcan Replacement?
Vulcan systems are mains-pressure storage water heaters, so incoming water pressure and the valve arrangement matter. Current Vulcan electric specifications commonly use an 850kPa expansion-control-valve setting where an ECV is required, while current gas-storage specifications use a higher 1200kPa ECV setting. Always match the valves to the exact water heater rather than reusing components purely because they fit the pipe size.
Also compare water-connection positions. Smaller electric models can use different connection layouts from larger tanks, and some current 160–400L installation documentation provides dual-side plumbing arrangements on relevant product series. Exact dimensions and model-specific instructions should be checked before ordering.
Will the New Vulcan Fit Where the Old One Was?
Do not use litres alone to confirm fit. The Vulcan 315L standard model is approximately 1640mm high and 640mm wide, while the standard 400L is approximately 1840mm high and 690mm wide. Larger tanks also become very heavy when full, so the installation base and access path need to suit the new unit.
Before delivery, check gates, stairs, side access, cupboards, platforms and any restricted path between the vehicle and the final installation location. Also allow working space for valves, electrical or gas work and future servicing.

Vulcan Warranty & Maintenance
Vulcan’s current product information promotes up to a 10-year cylinder warranty across the electric range and a 7-year cylinder warranty for current gas storage, with separate parts-and-labour coverage. Individual models can have different terms, so the exact warranty should always be checked against the model being purchased.
Vitreous Enamel Cylinder
Vulcan storage tanks use a ceramic/vitreous-enamel lining bonded to the steel cylinder to protect the tank from stored water.
Sacrificial Anode
Enamelled storage water heaters use an anode as part of the corrosion-protection system. Water quality and maintenance affect how quickly an anode is consumed.
Spare Parts & Service
Vulcan is part of Rheem Australia’s water-heating portfolio, and Rheem provides spare-parts support across Vulcan and its other water-heating brands.
Keep the Model Number
Standard, DUOMAX, single-element, twin-element, Natural Gas and LPG variants can look similar. Keep the model and serial details for parts, warranty and future replacement.
Common Vulcan Hot Water Problems & Replacement Signs
A Vulcan storage system with no hot water does not automatically need replacing. Electric systems can have power, thermostat or element faults. Gas storage can have pilot, gas-supply, thermostat or burner issues. Valves and plumbing can also leak without the cylinder itself having failed.
No Hot Water
Check whether the property has the expected electricity or gas supply. Electrical and gas diagnostics should be completed by the appropriate licensed trade.
Hot Water Runs Out
The tank may be undersized for current demand, heating may be restricted by the tariff, or an electric element or gas-recovery fault may be reducing recovery.
Water Around the Tank
Identify whether the source is a relief valve, plumbing connection or the cylinder itself. A leaking cylinder is a stronger replacement indicator than normal intermittent relief-valve discharge.
Old or Repeatedly Failing System
Age alone does not prove failure, but repeated faults, corrosion, poor recovery and tank leakage can make replacement more practical than continued repair.
Buying a Vulcan Hot Water System Supply Only
Choose the Vulcan system first, then check delivery and add only the valves, pipework, fittings or accessories required for the job. For a replacement, the old model number, capacity, electric or gas type, dimensions and a clear photo of the existing installation make product matching much easier.
